Kuala Nerus, 18 May 2025 – The Student Cooperative of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (KOSISWA UMT) recently hosted a benchmarking visit by delegates representing student cooperatives from 17 public universities (IPT) across Malaysia. This engagement aimed to foster strategic collaboration, inspire innovation, and share best practices in strengthening student-led cooperative movements on campus.
The delegation was warmly welcomed by Dr. Mohd Shaari bin Abd Rahman, Chairman of KOSISWA UMT Berhad, who shared insights into the cooperative’s strategic direction and evolution since its establishment in 2010. During his briefing, Dr. Shaari emphasized the importance of building cooperatives that truly meet student needs while maintaining sustainability and relevance.

“Start with what students actually need—not just ambitious ideas. Focus on impact and long-term viability,” he advised.
The visit included a tour of various cooperative-operated facilities such as:
GDex Authorized Reseller outlet, managed entirely by students
Affordable student-friendly F&B businesses such as 1502 Café and Faris’z Bistro
Self-service laundry equipped with vending machines
Well-organized parcel management and storage system
A showcase of successful alumni who once played active roles in the cooperative
Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) was represented by three staff members and one student from its student cooperative, reflecting UPM’s commitment to expanding collaborative learning and operational excellence through peer engagement.
This visit highlighted the transformative potential of student cooperatives—not merely as business entities, but as platforms for leadership, entrepreneurship, and experiential learning within higher education institutions.
