5 Things I Wish Someone Told Me When I Was in the First Year of Study

by Nazrul Irfanradi

1. Start to draft your resume since the first year.

So that you'll know what areas should you improvise and focus more on. Don't wait until the final year to prepare everything.

2. Start joining the University's Career Fair in the first year.

So that you'll have a clear picture of your career pathway and the industry demands earlier. Career fairs should not be attended only by final-year students.

3. Start to use LinkedIn in the first year.

So that you'll be able to gain connections and develop your networking earlier along the way.

4. Join a lot more industry-related programmes.

Instead of just joining a college and faculty programme, industry industry-related programme is also crucial in order for you to gain industrial insight from your targeted industry.

5. Learn a lot more industry-related skills.

In addition to academic efforts, it is important to learn soft and practical skills related to the industry. Proficiency in software such as Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, WordPress, and Facebook Ads management can significantly enhance students' employability. Likewise, communication skills, problem-solving, and critical thinking abilities should be learned to meet future job challenges.

The point is no matter which year are you currently in, it is never too late to start and learn something new, but it's always best to start as early as possible. As the saying goes "Fast Action, Fast Result".
