Serdang, August 22 - The GEMERSIK Choir, a collaboration between the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FPSK) and the Center for Entrepreneurial Development and Graduate Marketability (CEM), reclaimed their dominance at the UPM Semarak Merdeka Choir 2024 by winning the Runner-Up title at the Choir Competition held during the UPM Semarak Merdeka Program 2024, which took place on August 20-22, 2024, at the Experimental Theatre, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM).

This year, Gemersik performed the song "Gemuruh," composed and sung by Faizal Tahir, with music rearranged by Nurul Fazlina Ariff Abdullah and Shazwan R. Arzami, who has also been Gemersik's vocal coach for the past four years.

The Gemersik team brought home a trophy and a cash prize of RM 700.00.

Noridah Mohd Top, the leader of the Gemersik group, said they did not expect that just seven days of intensive practice would lead to Gemersik's success today.

“This intensive practice required every group member to harmonize across four vocal variations: soprano, alto, tenor, and bass.

"Although it was challenging, we dared to try this technique because it was our advantage over the other competitors," she added.

Meanwhile, CEM Director, Associate Professor Dr. Hizmawati Madzin, stated that the effort of each choir member from FPSK and CEM to apply what they have learned has demonstrated the success of fostering a culture of teamwork among UPM staff.

"I would like to thank the FPSK management for their solid support in collaborating with us at CEM.

"I believe the strong support from FPSK and CEM management has motivated the staff to deliver their best performance today," she further commented.

The UPM Semarak Merdeka Program 2024 was organized by the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Arts and Culture Center (PKKSSAAS), UPM, with the aim of fostering patriotic spirit among the campus community and the surrounding UPM society.

The closing ceremony of the program was officiated by Dato’ Prof. Dr. Ahmad Farhan Mohd Sadullah, Vice-Chancellor of UPM. - CEM
